Abstract:
Vietnam is a country in transition with an open market and rapidly growing economy, yet under the control of a one-party state. While people tend to believe that Vietnam does not have a real civil society, it is evident that many civic spaces appear in the country, in real life and on social networks. Those civic spaces and their activities continue to change many aspects of the society. From that observation, this thesis starts by asking how those civic spaces are formed in Vietnam in the social network era. Using the theory of institutions of D. North, the thesis analyzes the context in which civic spaces are formed. Then, the Internet in relation to the establishment of civic space and the party-state’s response to that are investigated. Notable virtual civic spaces from 2011 to 2021 are listed to search for a common pattern of their establishment.
